What is political discourse analysis

The topic of political discourse analysis is explored from a programmatic & analytical perspective. It is maintained that this type of analysis should go beyond contributing strictly to discourse studies to encompass political & related social sciences. A definition of political discourse is offered, after which the properties of various domains are discussed. Additionally considered are (1) the notion of political discourse as political action & (2) the features of discourse structures (eg, topics, textual "schemata," local semantics, lexicon, syntax, rhetoric, expression structures, & speech acts). In order to evaluate the political relevance of a discourse analysis approach, the analysis presents a systematic examination of the contextual functions of several structures & strategies used in discussing immigration & racism. It is concluded that in-depth discourse analysis of political interactions can highlight the relationships between political contexts, processes, & the larger political system.
