The Nigerian local government elections of 1998

The 5 December 1998 local government elections represent a new era in Nigeria's attempt at democracy. The poll was considered crucial because it was the first after a series of manipulated elections under the Abacha military administration. Certain old political habits were discernible from the outcome of the election results. Equally noticeable was the shift from ethnic and regional allegiances towards a national alliance. This was evident from the clear victory of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in several states of the federation. The victory, therefore, represents the first of its kind in a multi‐political party setting in Nigeria.
