"Essence and functions of domestic economy. Ways of measuring home labor" (by <i>Svetlana Barsoukova) </i>offers a fresh look at household economy stressing its current issues in the Russian context. In spite of losing its value, as standard texts on the market transition would indicate, home production has grown in Russia during the last decade. Meanwhile, households have displayed a rather unexpected economic flexibility and vitality. Following questions are considered by the author: What is household? Are any kinds of economic activities at the household related to the notion of home economy? How is interrelated home economy with informal one? Which character does home economy feature in varying macroeconomic environments? How do we measure home labor? The paper is based on an extensive study of theoretical literature both economic and sociological, and on empiric data of Russian scholars who have recently studied economic processes in Russia undergoing current transformations.
