Аннотация:

The article considers the potential for a rematerialized social & cultural geography by looking at three studies: shopping in north London; reading men's lifestyle magazines; & tracing the commodity cultures associated with various kinds of South Asian transnationality in GB. In north London, shoppers expressed hostility toward shoddy imported goods, foreign food, & a general fear of pollution through casual contact with strangers. Changes in shopping availability were theorized through a material culture perspective. The research then differentiated among men's magazines & among the different ways in which they are read. The significance of the magazines in terms of gender relations & as a successful form of popular culture is explored. Research on commodity culture & South Asian transnationality take material culture seriously as it focuses on the food & fashion industries. To do this, it contrasts the cultural meaning of different kinds of goods. It concludes that there a potential for rematerializing both social & cultural geography. 32 References. E. Larson
