The theme of Napoleonism in early 20th c. Italian literature receives its most profound treatment in the works of Italo Svevo (1861-1928), a famous master of psychological prose. In his main work, the novel «Confession of Zeno» (1923), Svevo interprets napoleonism in his own original way. He identifies the concept of a «great personality» with the concept of an «ordinary man». This proves the author''s idea that world history is coming to an end — a view characteristic of 20th c.
