The theme of Forum 2010 (Transport & Innovation) was chosen over two years ago at a time when the global economy was strong. Yet, as this paper suggests, a debate on innovation in the aftermath of the deepest recession since the 1930s is most timely. The climate that will likely prevail in the years ahead will add pressure on governments to search for innovative ideas in the transport sector and build consensus around policy decisions that will recognize new fiscal realities. In this context, the author offers personal insights on the issues and trends that that will shape the future of transportation systems, on alternative policy scenarios, on innovative policy instruments and best practices, and on barriers to innovation in the transport sector.
