Simon L. Frank and Alfred N. Whitehead criticize rationalistic tendencies in metaphysics. The experiencing subject has to be the fundament of ontology. Only at this point, the meaning of «being» for all entities in general can be accessed: as an active-dynamic, self-transcendent, creative reality. While Whitehead opens his metaphysics for the dialog with natural sciences by construing his concept of experience along the lines of Francis Bacon’s and William James’ empiricism, Frank deepens the concept of experience as «living knowledge» employing the method of transcendental-phenomenology, revealing the ultimate depth of being as «personal».
