Portraitist Jean-Laurent Mosnier was the only French artist fleeing the French Revolution who achieved a notable position in the English art market. His work represents a barely known chapter in the story of the artistic exchange between revolutionary France and other countries. The writer sheds light on Mosnier's exile in London (1791–97); his little known, partly unpublished portraits; and on the reception of his work.
