A Note: Hussein Chalayan, Fashion and Technology

Discusses the work of the British fashion designer Hussein Chalayan. The author describes Chalayans use of technology and the influence of the built environment on his designs, and traces his career, highlighting his collections The Tangent Flows, Geotrophics (Spring/Summer 1999), and After Words (Fall/Winter 2000). He describes Chalayan's series of architectural dresses from the collection before minus now (Spring/Summer 2000), considers his shows as performance art, highlighting Panoramic (Fall/Winter 1998), and examines Chalayans fusion of wireless technology with fashion in his Remote Control Dress (Spring/Summer 2000). He concludes by considering the technological implications of the Remote Control Dress, and notes the influence of Chalayans work on contemporary fashion and the integration of fashion, interiors and architecture in design.
